The NTFS File System in Windows XP and Windows 2000 automatically attempts to locate broken shortcut destinations by searching all paths that are associated with it. This setting can be used to disable that feature.

Open your registry and find the key below.

Create a new DWORD value, or modify the existing value called 'NoResolveTrack' using the settings below.

Exit your registry, you may need to restart or log out of Windows for the change to take effect.

Note: This applies only to target files on NTFS partitions. File allocation table (FAT) partitions do not have this ID tracking and search capability.
